Chapter Fifteen

“I think Sherbet was right. Maybe I should sit this one out, Kingsley.”

I finally lay in his arms—his real arms and next to his real body, staring up at his face. He pulled me closer. A gesture that enticed me to continue, “I’m telling you, it was you standing up on that mountain with me. It was you, until it wasn’t.”

He adjusted, so he could glance down at me. His amber eyes were warm and adoring and loving. “Spirits have a way of messing with the mind, Sam. You know that. When they’re trying to reach out to you, they can make you see things. Feel things even.”

“They were massive warriors—skeleton warriors with a vengeance. Are these the messengers you told me about? The warriors who were mummified at death?”

“No. It sounds like the area on the mountain has taken on a life of its own. Maybe a portal to another dimension or something sinister. I can’t be completely sure, so do your research, but they sound like Gangor demons.”

“Gangor demons? What’s that?”

“They’re straight out of hell and they distort perception—in the mind and body. It’s almost like they are the opposite of a messenger. While the messenger makes sure that spirits cross over, these beastly demons thrive on chaos and disruption. They tweak the mind. Like what they did at the mission when you thought it was me and again at the burial site.”

“Their mind tricks are powerful. They’re strong. A couple of days before the mummy showed up, the mission started having complaints from visitors about feeling the way I feel by them. It’s almost as if the door to their cage was opened recently.”

“I’m thinking they don’t realize they’re actually dead. Their power is in the mind. If they can confuse the mind, they can create the chaos that they feed on.” He kissed the top of my head. “But why attack you? Do you think it might have something to do with the note?”

“That must be it. And now, they’re dumping dirt wherever I go. Even at dinner with Brent last night, they dumped dirt on his chair when he left to use the restroom.”

“Dinner? Brent?” He pulled away from me to see my face. “What’s that about?”

“Work related. He’s my new partner. Or at least, he and Sherbet think he is.”

“My Samantha Moon working with a partner? I don’t believe it.”

I laughed and shook my head at the same time. “It’s insanity, right?”

Kingsley pulled his arm from under me and turned on his side to get a better look into my eyes. He rested his head on his hand while his elbow kept him propped up.

I ran my fingers through his thick-maned chest, getting caught on a tangle every now and then.

“How are things going at the department?”

“Work is bountiful. Lots of strange cases. Probably the same ones they would have sent me in the past as a P.I.” I hesitated. “But the resources at my fingertips are worth their weight in gold.”

“I can imagine.
